PATH Program Gives Ingredients for a Home Sweet Home

For most students, the start of the school year means taking time to get notebooks, pens, calculators and other essentials for the classroom. But for students who used to be part of the foster care program, the back-to-school season gave them the opportunity to receive items important for home, courtesy of the PATH Foster Youth Program at the Alamo Colleges District.

On a recent summer morning, former foster care students attending one of the five colleges in the District drove to San Antonio College to pick up apartment starter kits. These kits included just about everything needed to bring a touch of home to any living space, including a full bedding set, a cookware set, towels, a pillow, and cleaning supplies.

The students also received a backpack filled with school supplies for the first day of class.

According Cassie Jaquez, a District student care advocate who works out of the SAC Student Advocacy Center, 43 students came by during the pop-up event and received a trunk load of supplies. Leftover kits were later sent to the Student Advocacy Centers at all the colleges, where other former foster care students could pick them up.

The PATH program is funded by a grant administered by Bexar County Fostering Educational Success.
